Tow truck prices in Bayonne, NJ: one booking fee for either truck, the miles quoted first, nothing added for the street

On most towing price pages the truck type hides in the small print. Here it is the first line: rollback or wheel-lift, the booking fee is $149, or $129 online, and it stays that way because the truck is chosen for the car and the block rather than for the invoice. The miles, the occasional recovery line and the things we never charge for follow.

How a tow is priced

Booking fee plus miles: the whole formula for a tow truck in Bayonne, whichever truck comes to the curb

A Bayonne tow is $149 to book by phone or $129 online, plus miles at a rate you hear before the truck is sent, plus a winch or dolly line only when the car cannot roll or steer and only once you have agreed to it; the rollback and the wheel-lift book at one fee, and so does a wheel-lift fetching your car off a narrow cross street.

01

Line one: the booking fee, $149 by phone, $129 online, either truck

A truck arriving at your curb and your car going onto it, priced the same at noon on a Tuesday and at four on a holiday morning. Phone it in and it is $149. Enter it yourself on the booking page and it is $129, because the twenty dollars is the dispatcher's time.

Cars, SUVs and pickups all fall under it, rollback or wheel-lift. A van, a box truck, a bus or a tractor needs a wrecker and is quoted separately.

02

Line two: the miles, and why they are short in Bayonne

From the car's position to its destination, at a per-mile rate the dispatcher reads out on the call. The whole city is about three miles long, so a Bayonne car bound for a Bayonne shop carries a small figure and a Jersey City shop adds little. If you have no shop in mind she can name one nearby, and the choice stays yours.

Runs to the shore, upstate or over a state line are quoted as a long distance tow, tolls and the return trip included.

03

Line three, only sometimes: winch, dollies and recovery

A car that cannot roll or steer needs more than a hook: a winch to bring it out of the grass beside Route 440, dollies under a seized or bent axle, a skate under a wheel jammed against a Broadway curb. When the call reveals the need, it is in the quote; when the driver finds it at the curb, he names the figure and waits for your yes.

04

The lines that do not exist

A rollback premium, or a charge for walking a car off a tight block. A rate for nights, weekends or holidays. A fuel line.

A hook-up fee beside the booking fee. A seat charge for one or two passengers. Storage or release on a car delivered where you asked.

A difference between card and cash. A fee for calling to ask which truck you need.

Tell us the car, where it is and where it goes, and the total is yours.

The four jobs that do not need a truck bed: jump start, flat tire, lockout and fuel in Bayonne

Jump starts, tire changes, lockouts and fuel deliveries in Bayonne are one flat price each with nothing for miles, and because most no-start calls from the cruise terminal lot, the light rail park-and-rides and the Bayonne Crossing lots turn out to be one of those four, a lot of our Bayonne calls never involve a deck at all.

Jump start

For the battery that gave up during a week at sea in the Cape Liberty lot, a day in the 34th Street park-and-ride, or a cold night on a JFK Boulevard curb. Packs sized for cars, diesels and trucks. If it will not take a charge, the tow is added there and then, with the truck already parked beside you.

Flat tire change

Your spare goes on where the car sits, whether that is a Bayonne Crossing lot, the Route 440 shoulder or a cross street uptown. No spare, or two flats, and the rollback carries the car to the tire shop of your choice at the normal tow rate.

Car lockout

Keys inside at Bayonne Crossing, on Broadway or in the hospital garage. Entry tools that leave no mark on the door and keep the glass intact.

Fuel delivery

The tank that ran dry on Route 440, on the bridge approach or out on Port Terminal Boulevard. Enough gas or diesel to reach the next pump, at any hour.

Might not need a truck? Say so. The roadside price is the smaller one and it goes first.

Why the truck type is free

Why the rollback and the wheel-lift cost the same to book in Bayonne, and what that saves you

Charge more for the rollback and you hand the dispatcher a reason to send the wheel-lift to a car that should never ride one; charging one booking fee for both leaves a single question on the call, which truck is right for this car on this block, with nothing in the price pulling the answer either way.

Pricing the two trucks differently creates a quiet problem. When the flatbed costs more, some callers ask for the cheaper truck and some dispatchers oblige. An AWD car that rides a wheel-lift up JFK Boulevard into Jersey City can reach the shop with a transfer-case repair worth more than every tow its owner will ever buy.

An electric car with a motor on the axle and a wheel left rolling is the same story. One booking fee for both trucks makes that conversation disappear. The dispatcher asks what the car is and sends what it needs.

Bayonne offers a second temptation, and we remove that one too. A company that bills the wheel-lift's walk to the avenue as its own line has a reason to try the rollback on the cross street anyway and hold up the block for twenty minutes. Here the walk is in the fee, so the driver does what the street requires.

The vehicle's class is what can change the figure. A Sprinter, a box truck or a shuttle bus outweighs a car rollback and takes the medium wrecker; a tractor or a full-size bus takes the heavy one. Each is quoted on its own, and the fleets at MOTBY, Port Jersey and the Hook generally settle it once a month on account.

The other way a tow becomes expensive is after a crash, when a truck you never called delivers the car to a lot that bills daily and charges again to let it out. Calling your own tow truck and naming your own body shop avoids every part of that. If a roadside plan or a policy covers towing, you pay the flat fee, keep the itemized receipt and recover it.

One fee, two trucks, the right one for your car and your block. Call and hear it.

FAQ

Pricing: common questions

Short answers to what people ask about this page; the dispatcher can answer the rest.

Is $149 the entire cost of the tow truck?

It is the booking fee, which covers the truck coming to you and the hook-up, on either truck. The miles from the car to wherever it is going are added at a rate the dispatcher reads out before dispatch. There is no standard line beyond those two.

Why does booking online cost $129?

Entering the pickup, the car and the destination yourself saves the dispatcher's time, and the $20 is yours. If you are in a live lane on Route 440, phone instead; the call is faster and the twenty dollars is not worth the extra minutes.

Does the rollback cost more than the wheel-lift?

No. One booking fee, one mileage rate, whichever truck the car and the block need.

Does it cost extra when the wheel-lift has to walk my car off a tight street first?

No. Walking a car to the avenue and handing it to the rollback is routine Bayonne work and sits inside the booking fee.

Do heavier vehicles cost the same?

No. A van, a box truck, a bus or a tractor needs the medium or heavy wrecker and gets its own quote. Fleets settle monthly on account.

Is there a night or holiday rate?

No. A tow at midnight on New Year's Day costs what the same tow costs on a Wednesday afternoon.

Can I get a receipt for insurance or a roadside plan?

Yes. Every tow closes with an itemized receipt, printed or emailed, showing the booking fee, the miles and any recovery work, in the form reimbursement desks are used to.
